Caesarean Scar Recovery

The number of Caesarean births (both planned and unplanned) are on the rise in Canada and not enough attention or information is given to women after delivery about how to optimize their scar and  abdominal wall recovery.  Although, C-sections are relatively quick procedures, the healing process after delivery usually requires more time and attention than an uncomplicated vaginal birth.

During a Caesarean, your OBGYN will make an incision in your lower abdominal wall, just above your pubic bone.  They will cut through multiple players or tissue (skin and fascia) and into the uterus.  Once the baby is delivered they will suture the incision back together layer by layer.

In the first few weeks after delivery your body will begin to lay down scar tissue throughout each layer of tissue to allow for the incision to close and heal.  When scar tissue is laid down, it is laid down in a haphazard manner with the fibres forming in all different directions.  This healing process is necessary and normal! However, sometimes women will experience negative effects such as increased sensitivity, numbness or pain around their incision, reduced mobility of skin or discomfort with movement of the trunk, or even bladder urgency and frequency.   Many woman also report an unhappiness or emotional dissatisfaction with the appearance of the scar.

Scar massage is a great way to improve not only the appearance of the scar but it’s sensitivity! Scar massage can eliminate pain, restore sensation, improve urinary symptoms and core activation! Want to get started? See below on how to start.
